Our Commitment to Equality at Edwardsville Primary School
At Edwardsville Primary School, we believe every child deserves to feel safe, respected, and supported. Our Strategic Equality Plan (SEP) explains how we meet our responsibilities under the Equality Act 2010, including the Public Sector Equality Duty and the specific duties for Wales. This plan reflects our promise to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in everything we do.
What Does This Mean for Our School Community?
The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination based on certain characteristics, known as protected characteristics:
- Age
- Race
- Disability
- Religion or Belief
- Gender Reassignment
- Sex
- Sexual Orientation
- Pregnancy and Maternity
- Marriage and Civil Partnership
Although the Welsh language is not part of the Equality Act, it is protected by separate legislation. We make sure Welsh is never treated less favourably than English.
How Do We Put This Into Practice?
We work hard to make sure equality is part of everyday school life. Here are some examples:
- Inclusive Curriculum: Lessons celebrate different cultures, languages, and traditions so every child sees themselves represented.
- Language Support: We encourage the use of Welsh and English in school and provide support for children who speak other languages at home.
- Accessibility: Our classrooms and resources are adapted to meet the needs of children with disabilities or additional learning needs.
- Celebrating Diversity: We hold events like cultural days, language weeks, and assemblies that promote understanding and respect.
- Anti-Bullying Approach: We actively teach kindness and respect, and we have clear policies to tackle discrimination or harassment.
- Encouraging Participation: We make sure all children have the chance to join in school activities, clubs, and leadership roles, regardless of background or ability.
Our Legal Duties
We are required to:
- Eliminate discrimination, harassment, and victimisation.
- Promote equality of opportunity for everyone.
- Foster good relationships between different groups.
This means removing barriers, meeting individual needs, and creating opportunities for every child to thrive.
Our goal is simple: to build a fair, inclusive school community where every child feels valued and supported.
